St. Luke's Christian Methodist Episcopal Church in Saginaw is participating in Sacred Spaces. Pastor Joyce Redfearn shared a little bit about the church and its focus on Creation care with Michigan IPL.

St. Luke's Christian Methodist Episcopal Church invests in children by offering math and reading programs for both elementary and middle school students.

Pastor Redfearn, what can you tell us about St. Luke's CME?

We’ve been in existence for 87 years and focus our ministries on Christian education, math and reading programs for our elementary and middle school students, as well as financial security workshops.

What is your congregation's spiritual or religious inspiration for practicing earth stewardship? 

This is God’s Creation and it is important that we take care of the earth which He has given to us, so that we can evangelize and spread the gospel of Jesus Christ.

How do you understand environmental justice? 

It’s important that we are as responsible to our world as humanly possible and that we are to treat the earth correctly for generations to come. There are others who care about the things we care about and are willing to help those of us that are doing God’s work but may not have the resources to do so.

What’s one key take away that you hope your congregation and/or community gains from your participation Sacred Spaces? 

With these funds we are now able to purchase a more energy efficient furnace, energy efficient windows for the church basement, and upgrade our lighting to LED. We are proud to be a part of Sacred Spaces and join the fight for environmental justice and against global warming.
